How to Save Money on Makeup and Skincare

How to Save Money on Makeup and Skincare

Makeup and skincare is costly, especially the good stuff. My Instagram feed is full of my regular and seemingly expensive makeup purchases, but the truth is – I very rarely pay full price for ANYTHING. That includes clothes. I’m big on discounts and have some great secrets to share. Read on and never pay full again.

Try in store, shop online

Makeup counters are a lovely playground and a good place to try out products before you buy them. Go find out which shades you want, what the textures are like etc and then head online – often you’ll be able to find the products cheaper and save yourself some money if there’s free postage too. AllBeauty, LookFantastic and Escentual  are some great websites to pick up bargain premium beauty products, whilst TK Maxx is excellent for getting salon haircare cheaper.

Or you can haggle in store

Shopping online is great, but you can also enjoy a bargain or two in store if you play your cards right. Speak to the staff at the counter – they may be able to offer you a discount if it means they still get a sale. Explain you like the product but know you can get it for less online, and ask if there’s anything they can do – they might offer you some free gifts or money off to ensure they close the deal.

Sign up for all the loyalty schemes

Loyalty schemes are great, and they’re an excellent way to save money on makeup. Boots, Debenhams, Superdrug and House of Fraser all have points-based loyalty schemes which can help you save a lot of money when it comes to beauty. ASOS also have their points scheme which is great for using on makeup on brands such as NARS and Benefit.

Register for the newsletter

Did you know you can save 15% on your first order when you sign up to Bobbi Brown? MAC do 10%. Wherever you decide to shop from, sign up for their newsletters. That way you’ll always be in the know about discount codes, including once in a blue moon offers! I once bought a Naked 3 palette for £2o because of a special deal on FeelUnique I wouldn’t have had without the discount – filter them to a folder if you don’t want them clogging up your inbox (just remember to check them).

Search for a discount code

It’s easier than you think to pick up a good discount code, and so worth it when you get it. The right ASOS code could give you 20% off NARS products for example, which is just too good to turn down.  Websites for discount codes like dealsqueen Remember that a lot of clothes stores also sell beauty products, especially lashes and nail products, so you could save quite a bit by buying them from there instead of your typical beauty suppliers. If you’re looking for a good place to find a discount code, dealsdaddy is fantastic for finding the latest ones.

WHAT NOT TO DO

Now listen up, as this is very important. Whatever you do, do not buy your beauty products from eBay or from that girl on Facebook who’s selling cheap products. So many ‘super discounted’ beauty items are too good to be true, and are usually fakes. I learned this lesson a good 12 years ago but you’d be surprised at how many others fall into this trap. There could be times when sellers are legit, but the odds aren’t in your favour, and you can’t trust the ingredients to be safe and the quality will not be the same. It can be quite easy to spot the difference between a real and a fake, but take a look at what the genuine product looks like first and I’m sure you’ll be able to work it out (otherwise message me!).

My favourite stores for different products:

  • Nail Polish Direct – great for picking up discounted China Glaze, OPI, Essie and other top nail polish brands.
  • AllBeauty – good for getting your Elemis skincare, Kerastase hair products and other premium skincare
  • LookFantastic – I live for their 3for2s on Ciaté Nail Polish and getting discount on NIOD.
  • ASOS – I love their special edition sets, like NARS and Benefit, which I can use my student discount on!

So there you have it – never pay full again! It’s worth keeping a beauty wish list to hand so that if you do ever stumble across a good deal or discount code, you’ll be able to tick some items off your list and save some money in the process!

Happy shopping!
