Stila’s Magnificent Metals Liquid Eyeshadows – Review and Swatches

I am an eyeshadow obsessive. If there’s a new palette out there, I want it. If there’s some form of new sparkly shade – I’m all over it. You can imagine my jealousy when I saw people using a shiny new shadow product all over the web – the Stila Magnificent Metals Liquid Eyeshadows.

Stila sort of disappeared off the radar for a while. I remember them being everywhere about 10 years ago when the Lip Glaze was the product du jour. Then it went away, and now it’s back, with a vengeance.

If you’ve bought into the liquid lipstick phenomenon, you’ll know how great they are. The Jouer Cosmetics and MAC Retro Matte are my current faves and they give a lovely matte finish without the drying effect you get from your normal lipstick. They last a long time too which is great for avoiding to do several retouches throughout the day. Liquid eyeshadows are the next stage of the evolution, and Stila is ahead of the game. I ordered two shades (believe me, that was me showing restraint) – Rose Gold Retro (of course) and Smouldering Satin (deep tan with silver sparkle).

To look at, the Stila Magnificent Metals look like lipsticks, and you’d be forgiven for thinking you picked up the wrong item. They come in a sturdy cuboid container with a glitzy gold finish. The brush is quite thick which makes it a good applicator, as you won’t want to mess up this product.

When you apply the product, it looks quite thick, like it’ll never dry – but before you even feel the need to resist blinking, it’s dry. And that’s how it’ll stay. The finish is incredible, as you can see from the swatches. They are fully metallic with that hint of glitter which isn’t too overpowering.

So far I’ve worn them on an all day hen party and a messy night out and they DID NOT MOVE. They didn’t crease, smudge or anything. I even went to sleep with it still on after the messy night and it was still there. I could have gone out with it still on, but that would have been gross…

You have to be careful with the application as once it’s dry, it’s difficult to blend out. I’ve focused on solely doing my lid and then applying other shadows to deepen the look around it, blending them in. As the colours are so striking, you could wear on their own with a slick of eyeliner.

Rose Gold Retro is what you expect – a rose gold metallic shadow which gives a gorgeous, coppery look. Not the easiest to pull off but blended with the right colours it can be amazing. I like the silver glitter in it more than I thought I would, it stops it from being too warm.

Meanwhile, Smouldering Satin is more of a deep bronze colour which I thought I’d made a huge mistake with when I swatched it on my hand – I thought it was too similar to Rose Gold Retro and looked rather rubbish to be honest. Then I put it on my eyes – it’s amazing. It gives a gorgeous wash of bronze colour which I am going to love to death over the summer when my skin is tanned. It makes my eyes pop and looked lovely with deeper tones to bring out the shade for a smoky eye.

The downside to the products, and one I’m not sure if anyone else has experienced, is that it is difficult to apply eye liner on top. I had to put several coats on to get the black to be black, as opposed to the slate colour that I started with. I’m sure there are liners that can do the job, but as I’m using mascara as liquid liner at the moment, I can’t really tell.

I’m so glad I bought these products. I made it one of my resolutions to branch out on my products and this was a good choice. The colours are fantastic, the finish is everything I’ve been looking for and I can’t wait to try some new shades. They’re £23 each but you can get them from ASOS, Cult Beauty, Look Fantastic and other online stores which always have discounts, so pick them up when you can get a deal.

Have you tried Magnificent Metals? Or any other kind of liquid eyeshadow? I’d love to know what you think!

I’ve definitely got to try these. As for eyeliner I find Urban Decay razor sharp eyeliner works really well on top of glitter. It’s my HG eyeliner anyway but it works even on top of my Mac 3D glitter. Great post x
